10 Best Things to Do in Porto With Kids

The best things to do in Porto with kids are riding the Gaia Cable Car, taking a short Douro River cruise, visiting World of Discoveries, riding the historic tram out to the beaches at Foz do Douro, and walking the Ribeira waterfront. Most of these are close together along the river, so Porto is an easy city to do with kids in two or three days.

Porto is often overshadowed by Lisbon and the Algarve when families plan a trip to Portugal, but it is a great city to visit with kids. It is smaller, a little slower, and the summers are cooler.

Whether you’re planning a couple of days or an entire vacation in Porto, this list of family-friendly Porto activities will help you!

Do I need a rental car in Porto? You do not need a rental car in Porto itself. The main sights are walkable or a short tram, metro, or taxi ride apart, and Braga and Guimarães are easy by train. If you plan on exploring more of northern Portugal at your own pace, like the Douro Valley, you may want to rent a car. If you do, we recommend AutoEurope for all car rentals.

What are the best things to do in Porto with kids?

Here are 10 of the best things to do in Porto with kids, listed in no particular order.

1. Ride the Gaia Cable Car

The Gaia Cable Car (Teleférico de Gaia) is one of the easiest ways to get great views over Porto without a long climb. It runs between the riverfront in Vila Nova de Gaia and the top of the Dom Luís I Bridge, next to the Jardim do Morro park. The ride takes about five minutes each way.

Kids usually enjoy the ride itself just as much as the scenery, which makes it feel more like an attraction than transportation. Young children ride free, and the cable car can close in strong wind, so have a backup plan on stormy days.

Tip: ride it up, then walk back across the top of the bridge, or the other way around. That way you only pay for one direction.

2. Take a Douro River Boat Tour

A river cruise is one of the most family-friendly ways to see Porto. The classic choice is a Six Bridges cruise on the Douro River, which takes about 50 minutes and passes under all six of Porto’s bridges.

It gives families a break from walking while still sightseeing, and the short length works well with younger kids. Boats leave from both the Porto and Gaia sides of the river near Ribeira.

3. Explore Livraria Lello

Livraria Lello is one of the world’s most famous bookstores and is especially popular with older kids and teens. The curved red staircase and stained glass ceiling feel almost magical.

Many visitors associate it with the Harry Potter series, although J.K. Rowling has said she never visited it.

You need a timed ticket voucher to get in, and it is best to buy it online ahead of time. The voucher cost comes off the price of a book if you buy one, and children 3 and under are free. It gets very crowded, so book the first slot of the day if you can.

If you would rather have someone else handle the tickets, this Porto walking tour with Livraria Lello, a river cruise, and the cable car covers three things on this list in one day.

4. Visit World of Discoveries

World of Discoveries is one of the best indoor activities in Porto for families. The interactive museum and theme park cover Portugal’s Age of Exploration, with hands-on exhibits designed to keep kids engaged.

The highlight is a slow boat ride through scenes of the places Portuguese explorers reached. Plan on one to two hours. It is a short walk from Ribeira, which makes it a good rainy day or hot afternoon stop.

5. Walk Along Ribeira

Ribeira is the old riverfront district and one of the most scenic parts of Porto. It is an easy place to slow down between attractions. Families can walk along the waterfront, watch the boats, and eat outside at a casual restaurant.

The riverfront itself is flat, but the streets behind it are steep and cobbled. A baby carrier or a sturdy stroller is easier than a lightweight one. The atmosphere is lively without feeling rushed, especially during the daytime.

Short on time or traveling with little legs? A private tuk tuk tour of Porto and Gaia covers the hills without the walking.

6. Cross Dom Luís I Bridge

Crossing the Dom Luís I Bridge is one of the classic Porto experiences. The bridge has two levels. The lower level is at river height and connects Ribeira to the Gaia waterfront. The upper level is about 150 feet (45 meters) above the river and has some of the best views in the city.

The upper level is shared with the metro, and trains run down the middle, so hold hands with young children. Older kids and teens tend to love the height. Younger children often enjoy simply watching the trains and boats.

7. Visit the Porto Tram Museum

The Porto Tram Museum (Museu do Carro Eléctrico) is a fun stop for families with younger kids or kids who love anything with wheels. It is inside an old power station on the river, and displays restored trams going back to the horse-drawn days of the 1870s.

The museum is closed on Mondays. Historic tram lines 1 and 18 both stop right outside, so pairing the museum with a tram ride makes an easy half-day activity.

8. Spend Time at the Beaches in Foz do Douro

Foz do Douro is where the Douro River meets the Atlantic, and it offers a nice break from sightseeing. Families will find small beaches, a long oceanfront promenade, and the gardens at Passeio Alegre.

The Atlantic water is cold even in summer, so think sand play and tide pools more than swimming. It is easy to reach from central Porto by historic tram, bus, or taxi.

9. Ride Porto’s Historic Tram

Porto’s historic trams are usually less crowded and more relaxed than the famous trams in Lisbon. Line 1 is the one to ride with kids. It runs along the river from Infante, near Ribeira, to Passeio Alegre in Foz do Douro, and takes about 25 minutes.

It is simple sightseeing that doesn’t feel exhausting, and it connects three things on this list: Ribeira, the Tram Museum, and the beaches at Foz.

10. Take a Day Trip to Braga or Guimarães

If you have extra time in Porto, Braga and Guimarães both make excellent family-friendly day trips. Guimarães is known for its medieval castle and historic center, and it is one of the best castles to visit in Portugal. Braga has beautiful plazas and a more relaxed atmosphere.

Both are easy to reach by train from São Bento station in the center of Porto. Braga takes about an hour and Guimarães about an hour and 15 minutes. To see both in one day without changing trains, book a Braga and Guimarães day trip from Porto.

How many days do you need in Porto with kids?

Two to three days is enough for Porto with kids. Two days covers the riverfront, the cable car, a river cruise, and one museum. A third day lets you add the beaches at Foz do Douro or a day trip to Braga or Guimarães.

When is the best time to visit Porto with kids?

The best time to visit Porto with kids is May through September. Porto is cooler and wetter than Lisbon and the Algarve, with average summer highs around 78°F (25 to 26°C), according to IPMA, Portugal’s weather agency. From October through April, plan on rain and pack a jacket. See my month by month guide to the best time to visit Portugal with kids for more.
