Visiting the Algarve With Kids
Welcome to our guide to visiting the Algarve with kids! Located along Portugal’s southern coast, the Algarve is one of the best places to visit in Portugal with kids. It is known for calm coves, dramatic cliffs, and towns that are easy to navigate with kids of all ages.
Whether you’re traveling with toddlers, teens, or somewhere in between, this guide breaks down the best towns, beaches, and things to do in the Algarve with kids.
While Portugal has fantastic public transportation, it may be helpful to rent a car if you’re exploring with kids. We recommend AutoEurope for all car rentals!

Is the Algarve Good for Kids?
Yes, Portugal is a very family-friendly country. On top of that, the Algarve is one of the most family-friendly regions in Portugal.
Here’s why it works so well for families:
-
Warm, sunny weather most of the year
-
Beaches with calm water and soft sand
-
Plenty of family resorts and apartment-style hotels
-
Short driving distances between towns
-
Activities that work for both younger kids and teens
It’s also a great place to slow down after time in Lisbon or Porto.
Best Towns in the Algarve for Families
Each Algarve town has a slightly different feel. These are some of the best options for families.
Lagos
Lagos is one of the best all-around bases in the Algarve for families. It combines a walkable historic center with easy access to calm beaches, boat tours, and restaurants, making it simple to balance sightseeing and beach time. Lagos works especially well for families who want variety without spending too much time in the car.

Albufeira
Albufeira is a popular choice for families because of its wide selection of resorts and easy beach access. While parts of the town are known for nightlife, many family-friendly areas are quiet and well-suited for kids, especially around resort zones. It’s a good option if you want amenities, pools, and restaurants all in one place.

Portimão
Portimão is a practical and affordable base for families traveling in the Algarve. It’s close to Praia da Rocha, one of the region’s most accessible beaches, and offers larger hotels and apartment-style accommodations. This town is a solid choice for families who want space and convenience.

Tavira
Tavira has a quieter, more traditional feel than many Algarve towns. Families often enjoy its relaxed pace, charming streets, and access to Ilha de Tavira, where wide beaches and calmer surroundings make beach days easy. Tavira is best suited for families with older kids or those looking to slow things down.

Carvoeiro
Carvoeiro is a small coastal town with beautiful scenery and a laid-back atmosphere. Its compact size makes it easy to get around with kids, and the nearby beaches and coastal walks add variety without requiring long drives. Carvoeiro works well for families who prefer a quieter home base.

Best Algarve Beaches for Kids
The Algarve has dozens of beautiful beaches, but some work better for families than others. Beaches with calm water, soft sand, and nearby amenities tend to be the easiest when traveling with kids.
Praia da Batata in Lagos is a great option for families, especially those with younger children. The water is usually calm, the beach is easy to access, and there are restaurants and restrooms nearby. Meia Praia, also in Lagos, is another family favorite thanks to its wide stretch of sand and gentle entry into the water.
Praia da Rocha in Portimão is a good choice for families who want a lively beach with plenty of services. Lifeguards, chair rentals, and restaurants make it easy to spend a full day here without needing to pack much. For older kids, beaches near the Benagil area offer more dramatic scenery and are fun to explore, especially when paired with a boat or cave tour.

Many Algarve beaches are well equipped for families, with parking, snack bars, and lifeguards during the busy season. Choosing a beach close to your accommodations can make beach days simpler and more enjoyable for everyone. We have a post with the 10 best Algarve Beaches for Families for even more ideas.
Best Family Resorts and Hotels in the Algarve
The Algarve is one of the best regions in Portugal for family accommodations, with everything from large resorts to apartment-style hotels that make traveling with kids easier. Although Portugal has a few all-inclusive options, we generally do not recommend them. Portugal is not the kind of place to stay at a resort and never leave! If you want that, Cancun, Jamaica, or St. Lucia are far better options.
Families who want an all-in-one experience often choose resorts, especially when traveling with younger kids. Martinhal Sagres Beach Family Resort is one of the most popular family resorts in the Algarve, offering kids’ clubs, family villas, multiple pools, and direct beach access. It’s a great option if you want space, kid-focused amenities, and very little planning once you arrive.
Another strong resort option is Pine Cliffs Resort, located near Albufeira. This resort works well for families with older kids and teens thanks to its multiple restaurants, beach access, golf course, and kids’ activities. It also offers apartment-style accommodations, which are helpful for longer stays.
If you prefer apartment-style hotels with more flexibility, Vila Galé Lagos is a solid choice for families. The rooms are spacious, the property has family-friendly pools, and it’s close to Meia Praia, one of the Algarve’s most family-friendly beaches. This type of accommodation works especially well if you want access to a kitchen or extra room to spread out.

Things to Do in the Algarve With Kids
Beyond the obvious beach days, there are plenty of things to do in the Algarve with kids. Boat tours are one of the most popular activities in the Algarve and are a great option for families. Short cave tours, including trips to the Benagil Sea Cave, are exciting for kids without being too long, and many tours are designed with safety and comfort in mind.
Dolphin-watching tours are another favorite, especially for school-age kids and teens.
The Algarve is also home to some of Portugal’s best water parks, ideal for hot summer days. Slide & Splash is one of the largest and most popular, offering a mix of toddler-friendly areas and thrill rides for older kids.
For families who enjoy spending time outdoors, the Algarve offers plenty of easy activities beyond the beach. Coastal walks and short hiking trails provide beautiful views without being too strenuous, and local markets are a fun way for kids to see Portuguese food and culture up close.

Exploring different beach towns is another easy way to add variety to your trip without overplanning.
Getting Around the Algarve With Kids
While public transportation is fantastic in most of Portugal, renting a car is the easiest way to explore with kids. It’s not required, but it might make your trip easier if you prefer to go at your own pace. Just keep in mind that there will be tolls.
Car seats are required in Portugal for kids under 135 cm (about 53 inches), so plan ahead when booking your rental. We always take a car seat. You can either take one on the plane, gate check it (use a bag!), or rent a car seat once you arrive.
