Travel Documents and Essentials

Every family member will need a valid passport, and it’s a good idea to double-check expiration dates well before your trip. Keep digital and printed copies of important reservations, travel insurance details, and passports in case you need them.

We use passport holders in different colors to quickly figure out which passport belongs to which person!

If you plan to use your phone regularly for navigation or ride apps, setting up an international plan or eSIM ahead of time can make arrival much smoother.

Clothing for Portugal

Portugal’s climate is generally mild, but layers are key, especially in spring and fall. You will need to bring some warmer clothes in the winter as temperatures can dip below freezing, especially in the northern parts of the country.

For the majority of the year, lightweight, breathable clothing works well for daytime sightseeing, while a light sweater or jacket is useful for cooler evenings near the coast.

Even if you’re not visiting during summer, pack swimwear, as many hotels have pools, and beach days are common year-round in places like the Algarve.

Shoes to Bring

Comfortable walking shoes are essential for Portugal, especially in cities like Lisbon, where cobblestones and hills are common. Sandals are useful for warmer days and beach destinations, while water shoes can be helpful for rocky beaches or tide pools.

We recommend bringing one pair of sandals and one pair of regular shoes per person if the goal is packing light. We love Tevas and wear them everywhere, even hiking!

Beach and Pool Essentials

If your itinerary includes the Algarve or coastal areas, pack sun protection such as hats and sunglasses for everyone.

We love Sandcloud towels as they can double as an airplane blanket, an actual towel, or a beach blanket!

A waterproof or sand-resistant bag helps keep phones and snacks protected during beach days. A dry bag is also a must if you plan to kayak the sea caves in the Algarve.

Packing for Babies

Traveling with a baby in Portugal is very doable, but having familiar essentials makes things easier. A lightweight travel stroller works well for flatter areas, while a baby carrier is helpful in hilly neighborhoods. We recommend a light, compact stroller, and while we’ve used just about every baby carrier imaginable, we tend to reach for a Tula on most days. We often use a Tula Lite when traveling.

Packing for Toddlers and Young Kids

Snacks are always a good idea, especially for sightseeing days or longer meals. A refillable water bottle helps keep kids hydrated during warm days, and a small backpack gives them a sense of independence while carrying their own essentials.

Popular water bottles come and go, but we love Hydroflask. While there are plenty of refill stations in the popular tourism areas, there are fewer in Portugal in general than in many other European countries.

Packing for Older Kids and Teens

Older kids and teens will appreciate having their own entertainment for flights and downtime, along with chargers and headphones. A small daypack is useful for carrying water, snacks, and souvenirs during sightseeing. This daypack by BagSmart is the one we use.

Reusable tote bags are handy for beach days or shopping trips. Portugal has done a great job at mostly eliminating single-use plastic bags, so it’s a good idea to bring your own anyway.

Health and Toiletries

Pack basic medications you regularly use, along with a small first-aid kit for minor issues like blisters or headaches. Sunscreen is essential year-round, especially near the coast. We recommend the brand “All Good,” which is safe for kids and reef-safe too.

While pharmacies are easy to find in Portugal, having familiar products on hand can save time and stress.

Electronics and Travel Gear

Portugal uses European-style outlets, so a power adapter is necessary for charging devices. A portable charger is helpful for long sightseeing days when using maps and cameras. What Not to Pack

Avoid packing bulky items you won’t use daily or too many shoes, which quickly add weight and take up space.

Packing lighter makes navigating airports, trains, and hotels much easier with kids. You may think it’s impossible to pack with only carry-ons for a family, but we do it all the time!
