10 Best Castles to Visit in Portugal

Here are the best castles in Portugal to visit. Did you know that Portugal has over 150 well-preserved structures and over 400 castles, if you include ruins? Today, we will discuss 10 of the best castles to visit in Portugal.

Throughout Portugal’s history, castles have been built all over Portugal. Particularly in the northern, central, and border regions. These castles were mostly built as a defense against the Moors and Spain. You may not be able to visit every single castle in Portugal, but there are so many that you need to visit a few during your vacation.

This is a very family-friendly activity, but you may want to bring a baby carrier (we like the Tula) in addition to a stroller, since castles were not built with strollers in mind!

Do I need a rental car in Portugal? While Portugal has fantastic public transportation, it may be helpful to rent a car, especially if you want to explore and see all of these castles! We recommend AutoEurope for all car rentals!

Castelo de São Jorge (Lisbon)

Located high above Lisbon, Castelo de Sao Jorge offers sweeping views over the city and the Tagus River. The grounds are spacious, making it a good stop for families who want to explore without feeling rushed. It’s easy to pair a visit here with wandering through Alfama or riding one of Lisbon’s iconic trams.

Pena Palace (Sintra)

Pena Palace looks like it came straight out of a fairy tale, with colorful towers and dramatic hilltop views. It’s one of Portugal’s most famous landmarks and a highlight for kids who enjoy castles that feel imaginative rather than formal. Visiting Pena Palace is often a highlight of a Sintra day trip from Lisbon.
